Gardening 101

We can supply you with all kinds of information on what will grow well in our area.

Welcome to our beautiful forest.  We provide a beautiful low key approach to buying plants.

Barb and Tom Haynie, the owners of Creekside Garden Center Greenhouse and Nursery, have more than 45 years each in the nursery business in the northern Colorado.  They try to sell plants that do well in our harsh Rocky Mountain enviorment.

Our employees have many years of experience in growing plants.

Our greenhouse has hundreds of spring flower baskets, as well as thousands of annuals and vegetable starts.  We also have all types of garden supplies, tools, and soil amendments.

There are hundreds of plastic, clay and Malaysian pots from which to choose.

We have thousands of perennials and ground covers to make your garden a delight.

Because our location is so rural, near the Poudre River and numerous natural areas, you are likely to cross paths with White Tail deer browsing through the nursery, or Red Tailed Hawks and Great Horned Owls that nest here annually, or perhaps even a fox. One fall a Black Bear, probably after one of several wild bee hives in the forest behind us, climbed one of the large Cottonwoods in the nursery, waiting until dark to travel back upriver.

As for the human wildlife, you may see Tom hitting golf balls into the back forty, or Barb riding her big black horse "Kismet" bareback, perhaps jumping the course of natural fences she built in the field adjoining the nursery. Our employees are not only knowledgeable and helpful, but are unique and fun, and when we were all young together (long, long ago), quite frisky. Jana, who has worked for our nurseries since the seventies, served several terms as president of the local school board. Each summer she travels to the Oregon coast where she collects kelp from the beaches, to be made into art objects, for sale in our "So-Called Gallery." Pat who has also worked for us on and off since the seventies, bred Irish Setters, one of which became a national champion!  One of our past employees now sails boats up and down the Pacific coast from Santa Cruz to Morro Bay - alone, at age sixty! Another now lives in an ashram in India!

Tom built the greenhouse single-handedly through our first winter at Creekside Garden Center. The little white house on the frontage was hauled onto its present site in the thirties.

Tom grew up in Palo Alto, CA, and Honolulu, Hawaii, a swimmer and surfer.  Barb came to Fort Collins with her parents in 1954 when the population was 27,000. Both cut their teeth in the nursery business by starting and building up Fossil Creek Nursery from scratch and operating it for eighteen years.
